Seismic Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Silos under Far-Field and Near-Fault Earthquakes

Silos are strategical structures used to stockpile various types of granular materials. They highly vulnerable earthquake excitation and have been frequently reported fail at a higher rate than any other industrial structure. The seismic response silos within the near-fault region will suffer complex combination loadings due unique characteristics ground motions; which usually associated with large amplitude pulse beginning either velocity or displacement time histories. This study aims numerically evaluate reinforced concrete cylindrical under motions (NFGM) far-field (FFGM). assessment investigates impact slenderness ratio parameters’ influence on behavior silos. validity Eurocode provisions in structural safety also be inspected. nonlinear history analysis is carried out through finite element approach by examining four different ratios. damage plasticity model assigned silo wall simulate plastic zone; while, stored material represented Drucker-Prager model. wall-granular interaction considered defined coulomb’s friction theory. results records reveal growth up 72.8% hoop stress 160.4% vertical compared earthquakes. Consequently, sensitive type motion, slender tend impose greater demand NFGM. Additionally, Eurocode-8 were adequate conventional less effective zone.
